Candakarana adalah semacam kamus atau bisa juga disebut ensiklopedia Jawa Kuna dan versinya yang paling awal kira-kira ditulis pada abad ke-8 Masehi.

Para pakar menduga periode yang sangat awal ini karena kitab ini memuat nama Syailendra. Sedangkan raja Syailendra yang membangun candi Borobudur ini diperkirakan memerintah pada akhir abad ke-8 Masehi.
